Optimization

Mathematical optimization is an area of applied mathematics in which we seek to calculate the best possible solution for a given problem with the help of a computer. For example, when we use a smartphone to find the fastest way to some destination, such an optimization problem is solved in the background. The goal is often to find a solution that requires the least amount of energy, time or money.

Research areas

Our research groups at TUM in the area of optimization are specialized in such mathematical optimization problems. They explore the theoretical foundations and develop algorithms that can be used in areas such as

  • communication networks
  • logistics
  • machine learning
  • game theory
  • operations research
  • optimal control
  • scheduling
  • shape, topology, and material optimization.
