Outreach Activities

Mathematics is a living subject – as our outreach activities show: In the school portal, you will find many offers for students and teachers. The ix-quadrat hands-on mathematics exhibition is aimed at young and old and shows that mathematics can be "grasped". The news from the Department of Mathematics will show you where mathematics is alive.

The ix-quadrat is a hands-on exhibition which aims to awaken interest in mathematics in general and makes mathematics literally tangible.

News from the Department of Mathematics

Prof. Michael Ulbrich is the new Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Optimization and Engineering"

As of July 1, 2023, the internationally renowned Springer journal "Optimization and Engineering" has appointed Prof. Michael Ulbrich, Director of the Chair of Mathematical Optimization, as its new Editor-in-Chief. He succeeds Prof. Nikolaos Sahinidis who is stepping down from his office after five years.

Michael Ulbrich will hold the office of Editor-in-Chief until the end of 2023 together with the previous Editor-in-Chief Nikolaos Sahinidis, professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta (USA). From January 1, 2024, he will assume his role alone.

About Prof. Michael Ulbrich

The research of Michael Ulbrich centers on nonlinear optimization and optimal control. He is particularly interested in the development and analysis of efficient algorithms for solving challenging large-scale nonlinear optimization problems.

Since 2022, he serves as the Head of the Department of Mathematics at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology and is a member of the School Council. He is also associate editor of several leading journals, including the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing and Mathematical Programming Computation.

About "Optimization and Engineering"

The Springer journal "Optimization and Engineering" (OPTE) is a multidisciplinary journal primarily focusing on the advancement and application of optimization methods in engineering. Its published articles make a genuine mathematical optimization contribution to a challenging engineering problem.
